Julia Strand :
Dive

Gallery Katariina is delighted to present the exhibition Dive by Julia Strand 27 June –20 July, 2025. We warmly invite you to the exhibition opening on Thursday, 26 June from 5 to 7 pm!
In her exhibition Dive, Julia Strand examines the details, shapes and images of the underwater world. The exhibition brings together the visible and the invisible, the real and the imaginary, beneath the surface. History, current challenges and mystery can be felt in the themes of the works.
The exhibition's ceramic sculptures and oil and acrylic paintings form a whole where playful shapes, colours and layers meet. The works invite you to take a closer look; to explore and linger.
Strand's works often borrow elements from nature and vegetation, they play with scale, texture and the dialogue between materials. The works' minimal form and the communication created by colour and surface are key. Materiality, making with hands and humour are strongly present in the works. Ambiguous imagery, sensibility and space for open encounters play a central role in the works.
Julia Strand (b. 1986) is a visual artist living and working in Helsinki. She graduated with a Master of Arts from Aalto University in 2022 and also has a visual artist education from Satakunta University of Applied Sciences in Kankaanpää. Strand's work has been seen in several exhibitions, including Runo Biannual 4 (2024), Galleria Mältinranta (2023) and Art Center Salmela (2023). Strand's works are in several private collections, as well as in the collections of the Finnish State, Finnish Art Society and the City of Seinäjoki.
